A new exhibition comes from the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a new look at the religious paintings, drawings and prints by one of the most revered artists in history.
"Rembrandt and the face of Jesus" opens Wednesday in Philadelphia, three months after its premiere run at the Louvre in Paris. It is the only East Coast stop of the exhibition, which runs until October 30 and contains works from public and private collections in the U.S. and Europe.
The exhibition of more than 50 works by the Dutch master and his disciples in particular includes a group of oil paintings of Jesus Christ. These pieces of art have been seen together since leaving Amsterdam Rembrandt studio in 1656.
Timothy Rub, director general and director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, called the show "a rare moment to observe the image of Jesus through the imagination of this brilliant artist whose life was devoted to representations of biblical truth."
