U.S. SUES ALABAMA OVER IMMIGRATION LAW

Obama is challenging new immigration law of Alabama, allows police to detain people suspected of being illegal immigrants after a traffic stop.

The Justice Department says the law conflicts with federal law and undermines Alabama federal immigration priorities.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Alabama, the government says the state law that expands the opportunities for Alabama police to push immigrants imprisoned for various immigration offenses.

The Justice Department says that a state can not set its own immigration policy and can not pass laws that conflict with federal immigration laws.

The department said Birmingham Police Chief AC Roper as saying that the bill would divert scarce resources away from local priorities to the immigration law.

Last year, the department obtained a preliminary injunction against Arizona immigration law.
